Owner Mick Weston always had the dream of running his own record shop, since working at his Uncles record shop in Coventry in the 70's. The opportunity came in early 2019 when he took over the shop from previous owner. After a thorough refurbishment he opened Wired Records in April 2019. Business was steadily building then we entered several lockdowns so it's been a struggle and to be honest initially he did not think it would survive but thanks to an increase in online sales and a strong, customer base things are looking positive for the future.
Initially he was only dealing in second hand vinyl but have now moved into selling new vinyl as well, which caters for a wider audience.
He is looking forward to welcoming back his regular customers and attracting new customers as thanks to Covid he has really missed the personal contact, talking about records, musical memories and learning about new music.
Mick was one of those that sold, gave away his vinyl collection when CDs were introduced. But randomly around 5 years ago whilst travelling around Europe on his motorbike he discovered the joy of vinyl again. Firstly, in Groningen (Netherlands) then Copenhagen where he started my vinyl collection again, pretty much mirroring his initial purchases as a child (though not bothering with his first single though) New Seekers -I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing. By the end of the fortnight, he had bought around 100 records. It made a very interesting journey back on a motorbike.
Like all record shops Mick has his fair share of eccentric character popping in. One man came in asking for car parts. Tempted to offer him something by ‘Clutch’ the American rock band or something by’ Turin Brakes’ Mick pointed out he was a record shop.
Then there is the toothless man who comes in and writes his requests down as Mick can’t understand him.
Unfortunately, Mick let it be known that he used to be a nurse. The result is customers come in with no intention of buying a record but to ask his advice on abdominal pain.
Over the years Peterborough has been a bit of a wasteland for record shops so I am pleased this little oasis has opened.
I look forward to visiting soon.
The books of Graham Jones are available in record shops or online. The latest book The Vinyl Revival and the Shops that Made it Happen has been turned in to a film. It has just been released on DVD and is available in record shops or online. Distributed by Proper Music.
Each week I record The Vinyl Revival Record Shop Podcast. It contains lots of funny tales from the crazy world of record retailing. It is also available on Spotify.

As the person who has visited more record shops than any other human, I often
get asked my advice on buying turntables. I always say do not purchase a budget
model. What is the point of buying one that costs the price of a few
albums? The sound will not do the recordings justice. For a long time, I have
recommended Rega Turntables as they are superb quality
at great prices. They got more brownie points for sponsoring 'Record Store
Day' and manufacturing limited editions just for record shops.
